The European Green Deal aspires to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with a commitment to ‘leave no one behind.’ However, current environmental policies often overlook the diverse social impacts on marginalised groups. Low-income populations, racial minorities, women, or rural communities frequently bear the brunt of environmental challenges, while also facing significant barriers to accessing green solutions. These groups are often excluded from decision-making processes despite possessing the necessary local knowledge and demonstrating resilience and innovation in the face of environmental challenges. ACCTING has critically examined the social and economic impacts of the European Green Deal on marginalised groups. By employing a gender+ intersectional approach, the project has demonstrated how Green Deal policies affect individual and collective behaviours, potentially exacerbating existing inequalities. Based on these extensive research insights, ACCTING has developed innovative, evidence-based solutions, including pilot actions and thematic recommendations that empower vulnerable communities and guide inclusive policymaking. The ACCTING Final Conference, “Empowering Change: Building a Fair and Inclusive Green Deal,” invites a diverse audience of civil society representatives, NGOs, policymakers, researchers, and Green Deal stakeholders to engage with actionable strategies for achieving a socially just and inclusive Green Deal.

Rivers are critical to all life on the planet. They are a source of drinking water and a vital ecosystem for many species. Clean rivers are key. In most recent years, it becomes clear that our rivers are polluted with plastics. Scientific evidence shows that these polluted rivers also contribute to the worldwide plastic pollution of our oceans. In this webinar, we will present the blueprint of our Clean Rivers project and explain how to set a project that focusses on tackling river litter pollution. El próximo jueves 29 de julio se presentará a través de un evento online gratuito la guía Red 4C sobre ciencia ciudadana y cambio climático tras un año de trabajo de más de 30 entidades. La cita se concibe como una oportunidad para dar a conocer la investigación y las propuestas concretas para promover el compromiso de la sociedad con un problema cada vez más interiorizado entre los españoles. La jornada la abrirá la Directora de la Fundación Biodiversidad del Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Democrático, Elena Pita. Tras ella intervendrán Maite Pelacho del Observatorio de la Ciencia Ciudadana en España y la Fundación Ibercivis con la ponencia: ¿Se puede observar el cambio climático?. El evento también contará con la intervención de dos representantes de Red Cambera, entidad sin ánimo de lucro que trabaja con el objetivo de conservar la naturaleza. Por un lado lo hará Paloma F. Valdor hablando sobre la Guía Red4C, la experiencia de 30 entidades, una red de trabajo destinada a abordar la mitigación y adaptación al cambio climático mediante ciencia ciudadana. The Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) Program invites citizen scientists from around the world to participate in the Mosquito Habitat Photo Challenge. This challenge combines Mosquito Habitat Mapper and Land Cover (two GLOBE Observer app tools) to document mosquito breeding habitats with photos. GLOBE would like you to take photos of mosquito habitats, in either natural or artificial containers. If mosquito larvae are present, you are encouraged to photograph them with a magnifier (optional). Then, we’d like you to take photos of the land around the habitat location using the Land Cover tool. Photos submitted during this challenge will be used to create automated classification programs that can identify mosquito larvae and the environments they prefer. Such computer programs can help prevent outbreaks of mosquito-borne disease

Public participation in scientific research through citizen science is gaining popularity across the world. Through data collection, citizen scientists contribute to the creation of open and research-grade data and build data literacy skills. Academic librarians are often uniquely positioned to promote citizen science projects both in the classroom and among community advocates, connecting researchers with life-long learners for the benefit of open science. During the on-demand session and throughout the conference, participants and attendees will ‘naturally’ engage with the process of science and learn data literacy skills such as data collection and sharing, by contributing to this dataset. Participants in the session will also be encouraged to pose questions, analyze data, draw conclusions, and communicate findings by exploring the data collected by conference attendees from around the world. To fill in the gap in physical conferences, the Living Knowledge Network will organise an online “festival”. It is a joint effort of Groningen University and international partners. You will be able to see and hear some presentations that were originally scheduled for the physical conference. And participate in a number of workshops and live sessions. To make the best out of the situation, many presentations will be done by pre-recorded videos. This will allow you - in whatever time zone you are - to watch them when you want to and discuss them through a chat function. Video presentations will also limit connection problems we hope. During the festival, there will be a social corner to continue discussions, and we intend to organize a few thematic discussions. Like the live sessions and workshops, these will however be during European daytime only. More information will be available soon, as we’re still working on logistics. But we do hope to meet and greet all of you soon, even if it has to be online for now!
