SPLASH-EU
from 04/11/2024 until 31/10/2025
SPLASH-EU aims to address the challenge of limited civic engagement in marine environmental policymaking across the EU by establishing an inclusive digital platform fostering active community participation and ocean sustainability advocacy. Initially targeting youth populations in Coimbra, Portugal, and Thessaloniki, Greece, the project seeks to expand across Europe. The SPLASH-EU platform facilitates sharing experiences, reporting local environmental issues, and mobilizing community-driven conservation actions, enabling informed decision-making and active citizenship. Educational workshops, community events, and ambassador training programs will empower participants with critical awareness, practical conservation skills, and advocacy competencies. The digital platform, available in English, Portuguese, and Greek, aims to attract active users generating significant civic activities and policy recommendations. SPLASH-EU aligns closely with the EU4Ocean Coalition's 2024 challenge by enhancing ocean literacy, civic engagement, and democratic participation, creating tangible positive impacts for ocean health and community empowerment.
Aim
The aim of the SPLASH-EU project is to empower citizens—particularly youth, young professionals, and NGO staff—across the EU to become active participants in ocean conservation and democratic engagement. By developing a multilingual digital platform, the project seeks to foster civic participation, environmental stewardship, and policy advocacy through accessible tools and community interaction. SPLASH-EU aims to create a vibrant, collaborative space where individuals can report local marine issues, share insights, organize actions, and contribute to sustainable ocean management. Through educational initiatives, ambassador training, and community events, the project intends to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to act as agents of change within their communities. By doing so, SPLASH-EU will address current gaps in public awareness and engagement, promote inclusivity in environmental decision-making, and contribute to a long-term shift toward responsible and participatory marine governance across Europe.
Needed equipment
The SPLASH-EU project is designed to be inclusive and accessible, requiring only minimal and commonly available equipment for participation. Most activities—especially those involving the digital platform and educational components—can be accessed using basic personal devices such as:
-
Smartphones, tablets, or computers: These are essential for accessing the SPLASH-EU platform, participating in educational workshops, uploading photos and observations, interacting with the community, and registering for events.
-
Internet access: A stable internet connection is required for full participation in the platform, online workshops, and communication campaigns.
For participants engaging in physical community events (such as beach cleanups or environmental walks), the following suggested equipment will enhance safety and effectiveness:
-
Reusable gloves: For hygiene and protection during clean-up activities.
-
Trash bags or waste collection containers: To collect and sort debris.
-
Comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing: Depending on the season and activity (e.g., sun hats, waterproof jackets, hiking shoes).
-
Mobile phones with cameras and GPS: To document local environmental issues, share data and visuals via the platform, and geotag problem areas.
-
Reusable water bottles and eco-friendly supplies: To promote sustainable practices during in-person events.
