Spot-a-Bee
from 23/04/2020
The Spot-a-Bee App is part of a Citizen Science project by researchers from Cardiff University and the University of Glasgow, focused on understanding which plants, trees, and shrubs are most beneficial to bees in urban environments such as city parks, gardens, and town areas. The project aims to explore how urban planting can support the bee population and potentially influence urban honey production.
Using the Spot-a-Bee App, developed by the SPOTTERON Citizen Science Platform, Citizen Scientists can observe and document various plants - such as flowers, shrubs, climbers, and trees - and the bees that interact with them. Users can record their observations and submit data on which plants attract bees in their gardens, towns, or cities. The App also provides useful information on common bee species and the plants that are beneficial to them. By participating, users contribute valuable data that helps researchers understand how urban areas can serve as havens for bees and improve pollination in these environments.
Aim
The aim of Spot-a-Bee is to gather insights into how urban planting affects bee populations and honey production. the data collected will help researchers assess whether urban parks and gardens can support sustainable bee populations, contributing to biodiversity and the preservation of these essential pollinators in our cities.
