QuakeWatch Austria is an initiative by ZAMG (Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics) that engages the public in earthquake research. The App's goal is to collect data on earthquake perceptions and their effects in Austria, allowing for faster and more accurate assessments of earthquake risks. The collected information from Citizen Scientists helps to better understand the hazard posed by future earthquakes.

With the QuakeWatch Austria App, developed by the SPOTTERON Citizen Science Platform, users can report their observations of earthquakes, document any building damage, and track seismic activity. The App provides several features, including the ability to view current earthquakes in Austria and around the world, report earthquake intensity, and access a guide on how to behave during an earthquake. Users can also view sortable earthquake lists and an interactive map with details about the epicenter and related information.

In QuakeWatch, the feature Project Activities is used to display earthquakes on the map. The quakes are automatically synchronized from the servers of Geosphere Austria into the Project Activity system and displayed in per-Richter-scale colouring and dynamic radius calculation based on the earthquake's strength and depth. Citizens can select earthquakes and contribute reports about the felt strength, building damage, psychological aspects, and more information as spot uploads on their location.

Aim

The aim of QuakeWatch Austria is to involve the public in earthquake monitoring, allowing citizens to contribute valuable data to improve seismic safety in Austria. By participating, users not only enhance their awareness of earthquake risks but also support efforts to assess and mitigate future earthquake hazards, ultimately contributing to the safety and preparedness of the population.
