Our Outdoors is a Citizen Science project by the Scottish Collaboration for Public Health Research and Practice (SCPHRP) at the University of Edinburgh, in partnership with Sustrans, the MRC, and local citizens. The App aims to gather insights into how people experience public spaces such as parks, beaches, canals, and town squares, to better understand the impact of these spaces on community and well-being.

Through the Our Outdoors App, developed by the SPOTTERON Citizen Science Platform, users can record their experiences in public outdoor spaces, noting how they feel about the environment and whether certain spaces positively or negatively affect their well-being. The App also allows users to track whether improvements to these spaces - like adding trees or pathways - result in a more enjoyable and healthier experience. A significant feature of the App is the possibility of rating the observed places: Every emotion indicates a specific value which, upon uploading your Spot, calculates an average in the background, resulting in an "Average Spot Rating" visible in the Detail Spot View. By sharing their observations, Citizen Scientists contribute valuable data to a national database.

Aim

The goal of Our Outdoors is to use the data collected by citizens to create interactive maps and reports that will help researchers, policymakers, and the public understand how outdoor spaces impact community health. The data collected will also be used to identify areas that require improvement, ultimately enhancing the design and functionality of public spaces across Scotland for better health and well-being.
