NovelEco is a citizen science project funded by the European Research Council, designed to explore how people perceive urban wild spaces. The project focuses on gathering ecological and social data to understand the dynamics of urban ecosystems, particularly those that develop in unexpected or overlooked areas of cities.

The NovelEco App, developed by the SPOTTERON Citizen Science Platform, allows participants to record and upload data about the plants and other elements they encounter in urban wild spaces, including plants growing in abandoned or underutilized spaces. This Citizen Science initiative invites users to document their findings in a user-friendly and accessible way - which they can do on-the-go with the help of the Live Route Recording feature - and contribute to research on these novel ecosystems, helping build a comprehensive database of urban flora. By contributing to this effort, participants add valuable ecological information and engage in a broader conversation about the role of nature in urban settings.

Aim

The data collected through the App will be used to further the understanding of urban ecosystems and the public's attitudes toward urban rewilding and novel ecosystems. Over time, this data will contribute to a repository of flora data in urban habitats. It will also gather insights into social values and perceptions regarding the importance of nature in cities.
