Andalusia, Better with Science (AMCC) is a Fundación Descubre program funded by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness and by the Regional Government of Andalusia.

It is focused on the implementation of citizen science projects in order to achieve improvements in the environment of a community through science, technology and innovation. Since its creation, 12 Andalusian towns have finished 15 projects with a positive impact on their community. Despite all the initiatives have been developed in Andalusia, the new phases of AMCC are open to any city that wants to join without geographical limitation.

The project seeks the active participation of society based on community initiatives that address a problem in their immediate environment and respond to it through science. These initiatives are coordinated by Fundación Descubre. The community defines the problem, and designs and executes the initiatives, so it has the participation of different social agents. What began as an initiative led by educational communities, has now the participation of associations, local and regional public institutions, cultural entities or NGOs and research centres.

In addition, all the projects add the advice of scientists specialized in each subject; This support is provided by Fundación Descubre through the Expert Guide, since the essence of the project is science in and for society.

Aim

Andalusia Better with Science project aims to make society the protagonist of science and to demonstrate with different initiatives that collaborative actions based on knowledge and innovation solve nearby problems and improve the environment of the communities.

General goals:

  • Raise awareness of the importance of science in improving the environment, which is achieved by demonstrating to society the possibilities of applying science in its day-to-day life.
  • Sensitize the community to increase practices that are respectful of the environment.
  • Encourage different sectors of a community to become actively involved in a citizen science project through initiatives generated in and for their environment, where science plays a leading role.
  • Promote the active participation of the community involved in each of the projects of the program to achieve a process of improvement and recovery of its environment thanks to the execution of a scientific project.
