VERITY

Active

from 01/09/2022 until 31/08/2025

Trust in science is crucial for ensuring scientific findings are accepted, used and translated into practical applications. If individuals and society do not have confidence in science, there is decreased support for scientific research, which can impede progress and innovation. However, trust in science can be challenged by a variety of factors, such as the publication of fraudulent research and the spread of misinformation through social media. The EU-funded VERITY project will ensure science is transparent, responsible and accountable. It will identify the different actors responsible for upholding trust and develop tools and methods for improving trust. The project will combine interdisciplinary expertise from social sciences and engineering to synthesise existing knowledge and produce a Protocol of Recommendations.

Aim

The VERITY project (deVEloping scientific Research with ethIcs and inTegritY; Grant Agreement ID 101058623; running from September 1, 2022 to August 31, 2025) under Horizon Europe aims primarily to understand and rebuild societal trust in science by developing robust, evidence-based recommendations and tools for science‑society engagement and governance.

Specific Goals of the VERITY Project

1. Map the “Ecosystem of Trust” & Identify “Stewards of Trust”

  • VERITY conceptualizes an ecosystem of trust, which captures the complex interplay between actors that shape public perceptions of science—from researchers and funding bodies to communicators, media platforms, policymakers, and emerging voices like influencers.

  • It defines “Stewards of Trust” as those entities—organizations or individuals—best positioned to enhance societal confidence in science and foster co‑creation with citizens.

2. Diagnose Sources of Mistrust & Barriers

  • The project investigates the roots and dynamics of mistrust in science using systematic literature reviews, stakeholder focus groups, surveys, and social network analysis.

  • It examines how open science, ethics, integrity, and co‑creation influence trust.

3. Develop Tools, Methods & Strategy

  • VERITY catalogues and evaluates strategies, e.g. “machines of trust”, such as research ethics, integrity, science communication, technology assessment, and benefit-sharing.

  • It engages stakeholders through advisory boards, focus groups, and collaboration with related Horizon Europe projects.

4. Produce the VERITY Protocol of Recommendations

  • The project will deliver a Protocol of Recommendations, a structured, evidence-informed framework for Stewards of Trust. This framework spans six categories: building trustworthy science; public engagement; education; science communication; supportive policy; and collaboration.

  • It includes practical actions, identifies who should implement them, addresses challenges like disinformation, and sets the path for validation via workshops, citizen labs, and surveys.
