BioFuture in the City - BioFuturo na Cidade
from 01/06/2024
BioFuture in the City, or simply BioFuture, is a project that aims to drive change and generate knowledge about biodiversity and ecosystem services in urban green areas. Initially, the project is being developed in the municipalities of Araras, Campina do Monte Alegre, São Carlos, and Sorocaba — in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.
This project brings together citizens, teachers, students, civil society organisations, public managers, and academic researchers to observe and document biodiversity in urban areas, foster a human-nature connection, and co-create solutions for city participatory management.
BioFuture is structured around three pillars:
-
Local Teaching, Research, and Extension Activities, developed by researchers and students from UFSCar in the municipalities mentioned above;
-
Contributive and Collaborative Citizen Science Activities, in which researchers and interested individuals participate in data collection, interpretation, and dissemination of results related to the environment and biodiversity in urban green spaces. We primarily use BioBlitz as a tool for engagement and investigation.
-
Co-created Citizen Science Activities, in which researchers, public managers, civil society organisations, and any interested individuals jointly develop solutions to socio-environmental problems.
Aim
Learning to promote change in the perception and governance of urban green areas by studying their role in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services and in advancing the transition toward more sustainable cities. To achieve this goal, cities will be studied as complex adaptive systems, with a focus on their natural and social subsystems.
