The Thesaurus of Modern Slovene
In March 2018, the Center for Language Resources and Technologies of the University of Ljubljana published the Thesaurus of Modern Slovene, the most comprehensive open-access online database of synonyms for Slovene. It is the first example of a responsive dictionary - a new type of language resource that is initially compiled entirely automatically and then gradually improved by linguists with the help of dictionary users. The Thesaurus allows users to add missing synonyms to the dictionary or evaluate existing ones.
The Thesaurus of Modern Slovene is completely digital; as such, it allows for links to other language resources of the Center for Language Resources and Technologies (such as the Collocations Dictionary of Modern Slovene, the Gigafida Corpus of Written Standard Slovene, and the Sloleks Morphological Lexicon of Slovene). In the dictionary, users can also compare entries and their synonyms according to the words with which they typically occur; for instance, In Slovene we say 'huda kritika' (severe criticism) or 'strupena kritika' (literally 'poisonous criticism'), but we only say 'strupena rastlina' (poisonous plant), never 'huda rastlina' (severe plant). The Thesaurus also features authentic examples of use taken from modern Slovene texts. The dictionary is intended for a wide range of users: copywriters, language editors, translators, journalists, teachers, students of Slovene, or anyone else who might sometimes run out of words during their work.
The primary aim of the project is to improve the data in the Thesaurus of Modern Slovene, a responsive dictionary of Slovene synonyms initially compiled entirely through automatic methods. Dictionary users can rate existing synonyms as either adequate or inadequate, as well as add new synonym suggestions, which can then in turn be rated by other users. The project provides the largest open-source collection of Slovene synonyms, which is constantly being improved through user contributions, keeping the Thesaurus up to date with language changes.
