BIODIVERSITY GO!

Active

from 12/01/2017

Since 2017, biodiversity monitoring in Guimarães has relied on active citizen participation in species registration and identification through the mobile application Biodiversity GO!, developed specifically for the municipality. This participation allows for the constant updating of information on the species present in each parish, as well as the construction of a reference base regarding the most representative biological and ecological resources of the region. So far, citizens have registered and georeferenced over 400 species, which have been subsequently validated by specialized technicians.

As part of Guimarães' Biodiversity Action Plan 2030, free annual training is offered to the Green Brigades, i.e., volunteer groups that protect biodiversity and its intrinsic value in each parish of the municipality, as well as to the general community, with the objective of identifying the most representative faunal groups of the region, including Odonata, Lepidoptera, reptiles, amphibians, birds, small and medium-sized mammals, and flying mammals.

The Biodiversity GO! platform can be accessed through the website https://www.labpaisagem.pt/biodiversity-go/.

Aim

The Biodiversity GO! application aims to encourage citizen participation in Citizen Science projects related to biodiversity that are respectful of both the physical integrity and natural behavior of the species. Its purpose is to enable citizens to document and photograph their observations, record geo-location data, and easily upload this information to a shared repository. Through the application, citizens are able to promote the dissemination of the region's biological heritage and ensure its conservation.

By submitting their observations through the Biodiversity GO! app, citizens can help us become aware of species included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, such as the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) or the lusitanian salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica), or even detect new invasive species in the region, such as the silk plume (Pennisetum villosum). The application provides valuable knowledge on the species present in Guimarães Municipality, including those that are threatened, allowing us all to take action to protect their natural habitats.

Needed equipment

All you need is a device with internet access, such as a mobile phone, computer, tablet, or even a professional camera. You can capture photos with the professional camera and submit them through the computer on the Biodiversity GO! platform.
