Transcribathon - Europeana Transcribe
Transcribathon is a crowdsourcing platform that offers the unique opportunity to enrich historical material from Europeana and become an integral part of their digitisation process. This digital material — scanned images of historical letters, diaries and pictures — has been collected by various cultural heritage institutions and is showcased in the platform's numerous projects.
By discovering, reading, and adding transcriptions, tags and georeferences to these documents, users play a vital role in increasing their access and open up their future potential for research and education. Users can also join the race to compete with other volunteers.
Transcribathon aims to to engage the public in transcribing and annotating Europeana’s vast collection of digitised items, amassed from libraries, archives and museums from all across Europe. Many of these items, especially those containing handwritten text, hold a treasure trove of hidden information, not yet displayed in the metadata and therefore not readily discernible nor searchable. With citizens' help in transforming this digital heritage—by transcribing the text, annotating the contents and adding valuable descriptions—they can become rich and powerful sources of information. The data can then be sent back to Europeana Collections and become easily read, searched, and categorised to the benefit of the wider public.
