Citizen science campaign in the LIFE integrated project for enhanced management of Natura 2000 in Slovenia
from 01/01/2019
LIFE Integrated Project for Enhanced Management of Natura 2000 in Slovenia (LIFE-IP NATURA.SI) is managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning in cooperation with 14 partners. The project predominantly enhance the management of Natura 2000 in Slovenia in cooperation with various sectors and stakeholders. Additionally to the improvements at the state level, partners of the project will also carry out concrete operations in the field in 8 Natura 2000 sites. The activities are going to include preventing the overgrowth of land, eradicating invasive alien species, restoring and maintaining a favourable status of water bodies, etc. LIFE-IP NATURA.SI project is co-financed by the European Union from the LIFE Programme funds, by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning and by partners. Part of the project is nature conservation activities for the-four lined snake.
Aim
One of the main goals of LIFE-IP NATURA. SI (LIFE17 IPE/SI/000011) is to improve the conservation status of the four-lined snake (Elaphe quatuorlineata) in the NATURA 2000 area Slovenska Istra (SI3000212) in western Slovenia. The secretive behaviour and life history of snakes make their study challenging, and knowledge of their biology, ecology, and distribution remains incomplete. The citizen science approach will help collect data on the distribution of the species to support monitoring and improve knowledge of the status of the four-lined snake population in the selected Natura 2000 site. The campaign to involve people has to be designed with clear information, respectful behaviour towards snakes, and considering the limitations of the pandemic of Covid-19.
Needed equipment
No special equipment is required. We encourage people to send geotagged photos (of sufficient quality to identify the species) of live specimens with sightings.
