Global Citizen Science Month Expands with European Collaboration

Participatory science gains traction; researchers aim for more than 1,000,000 Acts of Science this April during Citizen Science Month

This April, Citizen Science Month goes global like never before! SciStarter.org, Arizona State University, and partners are once again calling on people around the world to contribute to more than 1,000,000 Acts of Science—but this year, the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) is bringing a powerful new dimension to the movement.

ECSA is taking to social media to spotlight citizen science projects and engagement opportunities across Europe and the UK, amplifying the collective impact of volunteers worldwide. With a growing number of international participants, Citizen Science Month 2025 is set to be the most globally connected edition yet, uniting schools, libraries, federal agencies, associations, community-based organizations, and individuals in an unprecedented push for participatory science.

A true international movement
Last year, more than half a million volunteers from 126 countries contributed to over 1,000 projects and events, with participation happening organically rather than through a coordinated international effort. This year, thanks to the strengthened partnership with ECSA and other global networks, the effort will be more intentional in its outreach, engaging participants in diverse scientific research that matters.

Here's how to get involved:

  • Visit CitizenScienceMonth.org – Whether you want to participate, help others get involved, or showcase your own project, there’s a way for everyone to engage.

  • Follow along with SciStarter and ECSA on social media:

    • Find ECSA as @ECSAcommunity on Facebook, @ecsa.ngo on BlueSky, @ecsa_community on Instagram, and @eucitsci on LinkedIn

    • Find SciStarter as @SciStarter on Facebook, X, BlueSky, Instagram, and LinkedIn, and @SciStarter.org on Tiktok

    • To get involved in German, follow activities accompanying the Citizen Science month by the D-A-CH working group on social media: mit:forschen!, OeAD Zentrum für Citizen Science, Schweiz forscht and Citizen Science Zürich

  • [Optional] Create a SciStarter account to enhance your participation – Visit SciStarter.org/login to find, save, and prepare for projects that interest you. With an account, you can also submit projects and events at SciStarter.org/add.

  • Participate in April! – From April 1st - April 30th, 2025, join projects and events featured on CitizenScienceMonth.org. A curated calendar will highlight thematic events that can be done from anywhere.

  • Report your Acts! – Log your Acts of Science on CitizenScienceMonth.org before April ends. Track global participation and celebrate when we reach one million!

Science without borders

From classifying galaxies in Dark Energy Explorers to monitoring biodiversity through iNaturalist, volunteers worldwide will engage in projects that contribute meaningful data to scientists. Many projects require only a smartphone, making participation accessible to all. Throughout the month, researchers will share outcomes made possible by volunteers, showcasing the tangible impact of global citizen science efforts.

Building a global community

The expanded international scope of Citizen Science Month 2025 includes collaboration from participatory science associations across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America. ECSA’s leadership in highlighting EU and UK-based projects will ensure that more people than ever before can find meaningful ways to contribute to science and policy through citizen science. Moreover, the D-A-CH working group promotes Citizen Science Month on social media in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

Paul, an engagement specialist at the Northeast Wisconsin Land Trust, reflected on the power of global participation: “When it comes to conservation, we talk about the need to ‘think globally, act locally,’ and participation in events like Citizen Science Month helps us do just that!”

Join the movement at CitizenScienceMonth.org to participate, support research, and help us reach One Million Acts of Science in April 2025!
